Why another voice keyboard

Speak Cantonese, get Cantonese — not Mandarin

Most voice typing understands Cantonese, then writes it as Mandarin (我們, 明天) and translates or drops your English words. OmuType does one thing: it types what you said

What voice typing gets wrong is the names around you. Add colleagues, companies and products as Keywords, and when OmuType hears something close it types your spelling. Select a word in any app to add it

Good to know first

  • Voice needs the internet. Jyutping, Cangjie, Quick and English typing don't
  • 10 free voice minutes per phone per week, reset every Monday. Typing has no limit
  • Android only for now. Android 10 or later; the iPhone version is in the works
  • No voice in password fields. How recordings are handled is set out in the privacy policy

Questions

How accurate is OmuType's Cantonese voice typing?

It uses speech recognition built for Cantonese, then an AI pass checks homophones, names and English words. Adding the names you use as Keywords makes it more accurate. If something comes out wrong, say the fix.

Can I mix Cantonese and English?

Yes, with no language to pick. “send 份 proposal 畀 Kelly” keeps send and proposal in English.

Will it ever type Simplified Chinese or Mandarin?

Never. Any Simplified character in the transcript is converted to Hong Kong Traditional, including after AI rewrites, and Cangjie and Quick leave Simplified-only characters out. Cantonese words like 咗, 嘅 and 畀 stay as they are.

Is voice typing free?

Each phone gets 10 free voice minutes a week, reset every Monday. Typing is free with no limit. A paid plan is coming.

Can anyone hear what I say?

When you use voice, the recording and the text near your cursor go to speech-recognition and AI providers; our servers keep none of it. Voice is off in password fields. See the privacy policy.

How is it different from Gboard voice typing?

Gboard understands Cantonese too, but it often writes Mandarin forms and translates English words. OmuType is built for Cantonese mixed with English, and you can fix a word by saying so.
